The annual Great Ski Race on March 1 at Tahoe Cross Country Ski Area challenges cross-country skiers to race from Tahoe City to Truckee — a distance of 30 km or 18.43 miles. Snowshoers are welcome as well. The race ends at Cottonwood Restaurant.

The event raises funds for Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue Team, a nonprofit, all-volunteer organization. This is one of the largest Nordic ski races west of the Mississippi. What started out as 60 racers in 1977 has grown to more than 1,100 racers.

Shuttle buses will be provided by Northstar California from Truckee to Tahoe Cross Country Ski Area in the morning by reservation only; the cost is $3 and seats are limited. Free afternoon buses from Truckee back to the ski area will be provided by Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows; those seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Register the day of or online. The start field is divided into six wave starts; skiers will be seeded based on past performances. Wave 1 starts at 9 a.m. |
