Bijou Municipal Golf Course is a nine-hole executive course featuring five par 4s and four par 3s. It first opened in 1920 and was designed by Virgil Gilcrease. It is a perfect place to work on your short game, as well as tuning up your drives, without having to worry about losing too many golf balls to lakes or rivers. There are no water hazards on the course, which makes the place feel extremely forgiving in nature. There are however, a few well-placed bunkers — enough to keep you on your toes throughout your round.
Great for families, events and experts alike, Bijou has a relaxed vibe and is a good option should you not have time to play a full 18 holes or you don’t want to break the bank.
It is a perfect place to work on your short game, as well as tuning up your drives, without having to worry about losing too many golf balls to lakes or rivers.
Most of the greens are fairly small, making your tee to green game a challenge. Once on the putting surface, however, the land is mostly flat and true, giving you a healthy chance to calibrate your speed and angles of your putting stroke.
A memorable hole is the 347-yard, dogleg, left par 4. Off the tee, it calls for a long iron or possibly a driver or wood if you’re confident in your ability to hit a draw. Very close in proximity to the right-hand side of the fairway is a nasty and sometimes unplayable out-of-bounds zone with tall grass. Hitting a fade on this will nearly always leave you in some trouble, especially if you hit it deep and cut through the fairway.
The course is walking only, but does have pull carts available to rent. It’s one of the few places in Tahoe you can still play for less than $20. There are twilight rates, discounted rates to play additional holes and discounts for kids and seniors. There are clubs available for rent on site. The staff is helpful and friendly and there’s a snack bar in the clubhouse with food and drinks, as well as a small practice area to get warmed up.
This place is without a doubt the best bang-for-your-buck golf course in South Lake Tahoe. If you find yourself in the area with a couple hours to kill and feel like hitting some golf balls, skip the range and come try your luck at Bijou Municipal Golf Course.
