Whole Treats Bakery has loyal following

Whole Treats Bakery is a delightful and charming café. The aroma of fresh-brewed coffee fills the air. The house blend is an organic Ethiopian, roasted locally and offers a smooth, robust flavor. The display case features a wide variety of muffins, cupcakes and cookies that beg to be sampled.

The Turtle Brownies catch my chocolate-loving eye. On the counter, a tray of ginger, oatmeal and chocolate chip cookies are reminiscent of cookies my grandmother baked when I was young.

Elizabeth Weir, left, with patron Sonia Martin.

I sit down with the owner of Whole Treats Bakery, Elizabeth Weir. She is as positive as the messages on the walls of her cozy café: “laugh, joy, hope and courage.” Her passion for baking, cooking and health is evident throughout the bakery.

“I use organic, non-GMO ingredients, and all of the meats are organic and nitrate free,” Weir tells me.

Sonia Martin, a regular customer, engages me from across the way, “The Maple Bacon Donuts are amazing and the Whoopie Pies are scrumptious.”

Martin orders The Mydazie, two eggs any style on a bed of fresh spinach, topped with a balsamic drizzle, avocado and crispy bacon. She jumps up to display her meal to me.

“I love this place,” she exclaims.

This is the key to Whole Treats’ success. Warm and friendly, the café attracts a steady stream of regular, loyal customers.

Spinach Feta Quiche

I order a slice of Spinach Feta Quiche. My quiche is light and fluffy with a savory balance of flavors and a flakey gluten-free crust. Definitely tasty. I can’t leave without trying the Turtle Brownie. Rich, decadent and gooey, it melts in my mouth. If you love chocolate, I recommend this delightful treat.

Open for both breakfast and lunch, Whole Treats Bakery offers a selection of omelets, breakfast burritos and scrambles. The Waffles with basil mint butter and bananas foster look divine, as does the signature dish, The French Toast Casserole.

Veggie Wrap

The lunch menu offers salads with clever names like The Farm, Arugula-La-La and Love the Chef and a lovely selection of wraps. You can order The Veggie, Chicken Pesto, Italian and The Gobble Gobble. The Veggie Wrap with Walnut Hummus and veggies is delicious, perfect for summer.

Located on the western edge of Truckee and off the beaten path, Whole Treats Bakery offers gluten-free, dairy-free and Paleo-friendly options. The food is delicious, healthy and well worth seeking out.

Whole Treats Bakery is located at 12047 Donner Pass Road, Truckee. It is open from Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (530) 582-1554.
