Taco Station

Veggie Tacos ·

What makes an exceptional taco? Is it homemade tortillas complete with unique fillings, or recently caught fish, shredded cabbage and a squirt of lime juice? Is it fresh ingredients prepared on the spot with a dash of hot sauce? If the latter catches your attention, try Taco Tuesdays at the Taco Station in Truckee.

Taco Tuesdays have become a weekly lunchtime tradition. The tacos are good and, for $1.25 each, the price is the best in the North Lake Tahoe area. The Petite Taco Mexicanos are prepared on two corn tortillas. Look forward to warmed tortillas filled with whole black beans (or pintos), seasoned rice, chopped cilantro and onions and a touch of guacamole topped with crumbled Mexican cheese. I like to get two Tacos Mexicanos and split a cheese quesadilla. Pieces of the simple, ample quesadilla are especially good dipped in one of the Taco Station’s variety of homemade sauces. Warning: The hot, hot sauce may burn your taste buds.

While I opt for the vegetarian tacos, meat eaters come for the biggest draws – Carne Asada, shredded beef, Carnitas, grilled chicken breast, shredded chicken or al pastor. Served with the Taco Station’s special white sauce, the fish tacos are delicious. On Fish Taco Fridays, I like to pop into the locally owned eatery for seared Ahi tacos or the beer battered fish tacos. At $3.50 per fish taco on Fridays, this is another good deal.

A visit doesn’t mean you’re limited to the namesake item. Taco Station offers more than tacos: Tortas, Taquitos, nachos and salads, as well as massive burritos. Side dishes include rice and beans, salsas, pico de gallo, chips and guacamole. Bottled beer is available.

Dishes at Taco Station are prepared assembly line style with fish and meat cooked just steps away on the flattop grill. This is the place to go for a casual, affordable, order-at-the-counter meal. Enjoy over conversation from the outdoor seating area or catch up and see the latest headlines on the flat screen television indoors. Lots of locals come in for the take out.

Every day is affordable and daily specials add to the satisfying Taco Station experience. In addition to the Tuesday and Friday deals, specials include Chile Verde on Wednesday and Chile Colorado on Thursday.
