Ahi Poke Stack

Captain Jon’s

A Tahoe staple, Captain Jon’s, is one of the most picturesque spots to dine. With the Spindleshanks’ dream team of Steve Marks and Hermann Schuchman newly at the helm, Captain Jon’s boasts a fresh, new menu in a variety of settings. From the dining room to the boathouse to the covered pier, they offer tantalizing tastes in the perfect setting. My assistant taster, Nora Daniels, and I enjoy an evening in the boathouse to sample the new menu.

Our server, Stacie (fresh from New Orleans) and our adorable bus boy, Matt, could not be more attentive and guide us with recommendations for the evening’s fare. The Ahi Tuna Poke Stack with gyoza chips and avocado appetizer was a worthy starter. Beautifully presented, it was every bit as good as it looked with a delightful combination of flavors. Smoky with a hint of spice, the crispy gyoza chip provides the perfect base for this delicious treat.

We follow with salad. Nora chooses the Classic Greek Salad with olives, roasted peppers feta cheese and lemon oregano dressing. This salad brought my palate back to the islands with the tasty the blending of feta and Kalamata olives. I select the sweeter Baby Green Salad with candied pecans, dried cherries, blue cheese and balsamic dressing. Both are fantastic.

For our main course, I was in the mood for fish so the Griddled Rainbow Trout with sautéed spinach, warm potato salad and lemon butter was ideal. The trout is light and creamy and the sides, especially the spinach laced with corn, balance the dish perfectly. Nora goes vegetarian for the night choosing the Roasted Eggplant Ravioli with Pomodoro Sauce. This is a hearty portion, satisfying in its combo of flavors. Vegetarians will love this.

Dessert brings further delights. Nora opts for the Apple Crumble Tart served ala mode with whiskey sauce. This smells amazing when it arrives and is every bit as wonderful upon first taste. The Chocolate Mousse Pie with fresh blackberries is my craving. Light and airy, this is an ideal dessert and both would be the perfect capper for a delicious meal at Captain Jon’s.

As we watch the waves of the lake gently lap against the pier, we are happily satisfied with this complete dining package.
