Falafel on Flatbread with Parmesan Chips  ·

Housed in a restored 1940s diner, Jax at the Tracks has been serving up East Coast comfort food with a twist since owner Bud Haley opened the doors in 2009. (The diner was moved to Truckee in the 1990s by former owners).

Haley has crafted a vast, and I mean vast, menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner creations that will have you hard pressed to pick just one entrée (good reason to come back for another visit). On my most recent stop at Jax with my sister, Michelle Allen, she was in the mood for breakfast, while I was craving lunch, and Jax satisfied both of our appetites.

Another bonus is that breakfast is served until 2 p.m. daily, with lunch starting at 10:30 a.m. to cater to everyone in the party.

Michelle ordered one of the house specialties – the All Day Addiction. A massive pile up of breakfast goodness with a base of hash browns, covered with Canadian Bacon, two eggs (she ordered poached) and piled high with mixed greens, avocado, balsamic and basil pesto. She also ordered a cup of the housemade Leek Soup, a daily special. Jax also serves a New England Clam Chowder daily.

Breakfast entrees feature more than two dozen choices including the Maryland Blue Crab Cake or Smoked Salmon Benedicts, along with choices from Southern Fried Steak and Eggs, to Belgian Waffles and Breakfast Burritos.

I went another route with the Falafel on Flatbread. Two large chickpea and cumin patties that were moist and tasty, filled flatbread along with shredded cabbage and a wonderful Tzatziki sauce made of mint, cucumber and yogurt. It was served with the yummy housemade potato chips topped with parmesan cheese.

Lunch and dinner feature some great starters from the Mac ‘n’ Cheese (be sure to add jalapeños to your order), Buffalo Style Chicken Wings or Thai Chicken and Cashew Egg Rolls. Then, you’ll delve into the burgers, Maryland Blue Crabcake Sandwich or the BBQ Pulled Pork and Cheddar, both of which were featured on “Diners, Drive Ins & Dives.” And, that’s just on the first page of the menu.
